"I'm a bit of a traditionalist—I still start every project on paper, whether it's just a few quick sketches or working out the entire image without digital limitations or CTRL+Z, as I search for that perfect line or curve."

Drawing Style

My work can be described as bold and sharply defined, and it pays homage to the golden age of animation. It’s often very colorful and full of details—sometimes perhaps even too many.

Biography

I have a background in 3D, but over the years my passion for 2D has taken over.

I’m a bit of a traditionalist—every project still starts on paper, whether it’s for a few quick sketches or working out the entire image without digital limitations or CTRL+Z, in search of that perfect line or curve.

I’ve always said that I wanted to show people that illustrations are just images on paper, like in children’s books, but that they can be so much more: T-shirts, projections, puzzles, tin cans, even painted electrical boxes or murals. That, however, remains my main goal: I just want to bring more joy!

Projects

Cold Digger

The can design for Cold Digger is still one of my favorites. I was given carte blanche to do whatever I wanted, and from sketch to final design, it turned out even better than I’d imagined. It’s a 360° story on a beer can, and if you only look at one side, you’ll only see part of the story. Only when you rotate it 360° do you get the full picture.

Do You Remember Me?

I’m still very happy with the poster design I created for my personal, ongoing project, “Remember Me?” It took some getting used to working on a dark canvas, so I had to think differently about my line work. And as I said, it’s a lot of work, and every time you look at it, you discover something new.

This or that

  • Sketchbook or iPad? Sketchbook , always.
  • Pencil or pen? Usually a pencil.
  • Black and white or full color? Since line drawings are often the most important part of my work, I always wonder if they should stay black and white. The right color scheme can often take them to the next level.
  • Creativity in the morning or at night? Creativity at night.
  • Perfectly planned or happy accidents? I'm a worrier and often plan everything in advance, but you can't plan everything, so you have to leave room for happy accidents.
  • Details or the big picture? Details—I like it when people look a second or third time and keep discovering new things. Speaking of details, I hide an apple core in every artwork—can you find them?
  • Coffee shop or studio (or somewhere else)? Studio —I feel a little uncomfortable when people comment on my work in public.
  • A museum visit or a nature walk? Both, or maybe an open-air museum?
  • Work alone or collaborate? Being an illustrator can be a lonely job, so collaborating with others every now and then can be a nice change of pace.
  • Serif or sans-serif? Cursive .
